ʻIOULI - DOCUMENTARY

Welcome to Iouli.art, where we proudly present our feature-length hybrid documentary that highlights the incredible journey of the Modern Hawaiian Art Movement. This remarkable story showcases the fight against racial prejudice in the 1970s and celebrates the immense success achieved through the inspirational imprint of ancestral culture and knowledge. As the movement evolved, it splintered into multiple groups, leading to the rebirth of the new Hale Nauā 4.0 in 2026, which instills hope for the future of Hawaiian Visual Arts.

Our hero, master sculptor Rocky Kaʻiouliokahihikolo ʻEhu Jensen (ʻIOULI), encourages everyone around the globe to embrace the power of Mana, the spiritual essence that connects all things on Earth. Rocky is not just a master artist; he is a patriot, an iconic hero, and an enduring kupuna. Our approach combines traditional documentary filmmaking with subplots, creating a painting-like vision of the dynamic motions of various Hawaiian movements, including the Dance of Hula, the Voyaging of the Hōkūleʻa, the Nurturing efforts from Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana, and the Soverignty Message from ʻOnipaʻa. Language immersion initiatives from ʻAha Pūnana Leo add to this masterfully choreographed storytelling. Set against the mesmerizing beauty of the Hawaiian Homeland, our film evokes a sense of enduring calm and peace, inspiring a vision of self-eternalness.

This film captures the birth and legacy of the Hawaiian Renaissance, demanding recognition for indigenous voices, the spiritual power derived from adoring Nature, and the perpetual interdependence of all living and inanimate things. Hawaiians awaken with renewed pride and belief in the magical power of their heritage, moving forward into a hopeful future, fueled by art inspiration. Holomua Mau A Mau. Forward now and forever.

ROCKY

When an ancestral image is produced today, it must adhere closely to the ancient guidelines established by the very first depicter of the abstract form. This notion resonates deeply within the Hawaiian Art Movement, where the essence of that ancient image remains alive. The modern-day artist, like Rocky Kaʻiouliokahihikolo ʻEhu Jensen, has the freedom to infuse his own style, much like artists did in the days of old. This results in a captivating blend of traditional art inspiration and contemporary expression, creating a narrative that honors the past while embracing the present. A charismatic hero in an enchanting story, the black hawk soars upwards to the sacred clan of ʻEhu.
